Prancing Pony Farm Tour
For those that would like a tour of our farm here you go! My dear friend Cindy Benson, of Benson Maremmas in Oregon, came down and did a video safari tour of the farm. She got a lot of great footage of our Maremmas in action guarding our goats, horses and other critters and everyone living life and having fun!
For those that don’t know, we live in the Central Valley of California. We only get rain on a “good” year during the winter but we have been in a severe drought for over a decade. In the Central Valley wells are drying up, trees are dying and nothing grows unless it’s irrigated, which is often not allowed because of water rationing. On our property alone we have lost over 30 mature trees to the drought. We do not have the ability to irrigate our pastures so we buy every bite our goats and horses eat, in the form of about 6-7 tons of high quality alfalfa hay per month. We have only one remaining tree in our pastures so we primarily use metal horse shelters, shade sail structures and dog kennels with roofs, along with our barns and air conditioned and heated Puppy Parlor, for shade. This lack of grass and our “tent city” looking shade structures means our place isn’t as pretty as what you will see in places that have such luxuries as grass, trees and rain, but as you will see in the videos, our animals are healthy and happy and enjoying life to the fullest!
When they call California the Golden State this is really what they mean! 😆
