Housing for Maremmas
We live in California so our Maremmas don’t need elaborate housing since it doesn’t get very cold and rarely rains. Usually they sleep outside in the middle of the pasture or barnyard. If it’s particularly cold or rainy (very rare) they will go into the barn or under one of the pasture shelters. For dogs and goats in pastures without access to the barn we use calf hutches. We have both rectangular Calftell hutches and round Polydome hutches. We prefer to use the rectangular ones in the barn for the baby goats and the round ones out in the pasture. They are easy to roll wherever we need them!
Calf hutches make great shelters because they are portable, relatively inexpensive, are waterproof, easy to move and clean, and they conserve body heat, keeping the animals very warm and cozy. We have around 25/30 calf hutches in use on our farm. We often look out and see multiple goats and sometimes dogs piled into one hutch like clowns in a car at the circus. You’d be surprised how many animals can fit in one hutch! But we keep enough per pasture in case one animal (usually a goat) wants a hutch all to themselves! If you need a good house for your LGD or goats I highly recommend a calf hutch!
