Shipping Information for Goats and Maremma Puppies
We do not personally deliver or ship goats and puppies but work with an approved shipper that you arrange and pay for. Below is some information to assist you in making these arrangements if you are unable to pick up your animals in person. Payments for animals as well as vet fees and all transportation related costs must be paid for in full before the animal leaves the farm.
Ground Transportation Options
Ground Transportation is usually the best option for goats and similar livestock, and can also be a good option for LGD's. Look for a shipper that is Department of Transportation licensed, insured and that specializes in small livestock and has a rig (truck and trailer) set up to accommodate smaller animals instead of horses. Cages piled in the back of someone's pick-up or van is NOT an acceptable mode of transportation, nor is transporting animals loose in a vehicle where they can get hurt or escape and run off. There are a lot of horror stories of people using fly-by-night "companies" and having animals get lost, stolen or killed. Don't risk your new pet's life to save a few bucks. Go with a reputable shipper! Below are the companies we have either personally used or that have come highly recommended by top goat and LGD breeders in the country. Most of these companies have regular routes and their rates are reasonable because they are shipping multiple animals along the route. Book early so you don't miss out on a route!
- Blarney Heights Farm Transportation - Our #1 choice for shipping for small livestock (goats, sheep, etc) and LGD's. We have personally used them more than once and were immediately impressed with their first class, custom built trailer as well as their knowledge and professionalism. They are commercially licensed, insured and fully compliant with all DOT rules and regulations. They have regular routes back and forth across the country and their prices are extremely reasonable for the great service and peace of mind they provide.
- Five Star Livestock Transport - We have not personally used this company but they were very highly recommended by many people when we posted on several FB dog and goat groups asking for recommendations. They definitely look worth checking out!
- Jim Hosley - We used Jim to ship two standard Nubian does from Urban Acres farm Washington state in 2020, on the recommendation of the breeder and he did a fantastic job. His rig is beautiful and as a fellow goat breeder he definitely knows what he's doing. Shipping goats is more of a sideline than a business but he does make occasional trips up and down the west coast (and maybe elsewhere?) so he's definitely worth checking out. His rates were very reasonable, too.
- Canine Pack Partners - One of our customers found this company and they shipped two of our pups from California to Tennessee in August 2021. They did a very good job and really seem to care about animals. Here is the review that our customer wrote for us about them: “Pack Partners did a very nice job transporting my two Maremmas from Prancing Pony Farm to Tennessee. Delyla was my main point of contact, and she was very easy to work with. In the weeks leading up to the trip, Delyla was very accessible to discuss the details of the trip and answer all of my questions. I really appreciated this quality. She seemed very knowledgeable about livestock guardian dogs, which also made me feel more at ease. During the trip, I was updated frequently with photos and interesting stories about the dogs during their journey. They were very attentive to the needs of the dogs, and I especially liked the fact that they found large isolated areas to take the dogs for exercise and bathroom breaks. The dogs were well taken care of and were dropped off with me in excellent condition. If you have The ability to be flexible with your pick up and drop off dates, I would definitely recommend you utilize Pack Partners. I would certainly use them again should the need arise.”
Air Transportation Options - Air Cargo
Flying pets by Air cargo is often very reasonably priced and the service is quicker than ground transportation, which may reduce stress to the animal. Some airlines have better programs than others (like climate controlled pet areas and vans to transport them to and from the plane) so check carefully before you book. Some airlines may not currently be shipping pets due to Covid 19 so it's best to call and check with them. . You'll need an airline approved pet carrier, which can be ordered on Amazon and shipped to us.
Air Transportation Options - Flight Nanny Services
Flight Nannies take the animal in the cabin with them in a soft sided carrier so they don't have to fly Air Cargo and are never unattended. There are weight restrictions on this option so check with the individual agencies for more info. There are several companies offering this service but it's probably best to stick with bigger, more widely knows agencies.
